The Effect of Notching of Simplex-P Bone Cement on the Fatigue Lives of Regular Versus Vacuum-Mixed Specimens
نویسنده
چکیده
Purpose—It has been shown that a partialvacuum slow-speed system for blending of the liquid and powder components of Simplex-P produces set acrylic bone cement specimens of less than 1 percent porosity with significantly improved uniaxial tensile fatigue lives over regularly mixed cement. However, those tests were conducted using smooth-machined specimens, which may not necessarily be clinically comparable to the in vivo condition of an irregular interface with cancellous bone . In the present study, the influence of cement surface condition on fatigue life was investigated with specimens having either machined 60-degree notches or cast into collars of cancellous bovine bone. These were compared with smooth-machined specimens.

The effect of moisture absorption on the fatigue crack propagation resistance of acrylic bone cement.
In vivo, bone cement is subject to cyclic loading in a fluid environment. However, little is known about the effect of moisture absorption on the fatigue crack propagation resistance of bone cement. The effect of moisture absorption at 37 degrees C on the fatigue crack propagation resistance of a common bone cement (Endurance, DePuy, Orthopaedics, Inc.) was examined. Preliminary fracture toughn...

Cold-in-place recycling (CIR) is an environmentally sustainable alternative for preservation of asphalt pavements. A major disadvantage of this practice is the lower strength of the cold-in-place mixtures. Addition of cement into this type of mixture is a method for increasing its bearing capacity. The effect of cement content on the mechanical properties of the cold-in-place recycled asphalt m...

This controlled study compared the strength and porosity of 48 polymethylmethacrylate cement-implant constructs prepared with open bowl versus vacuum mix technique. Forty-eight blast finished stainless steel rods of 13 mm diameter were implanted with centralizers into 17-mm inner diameter tubes that had been retrograde filled with polymethylmethacrylate cement. The eight cement preparations use...
متن کاملThe effect of vacuum mixing and pre-heating the femoral component on the mechanical properties of the cement mantle.
We investigated the effect of pre-heating a femoral component on the porosity and strength of bone cement, with or without vacuum mixing used for total hip replacement. Cement mantles were moulded in a manner simulating clinical practice for cemented hip replacement. During polymerisation, the temperature was monitored. Specimens of cement extracted from the mantles underwent bending or fatigue...

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of antibiotic-loaded bone cement in controlling local infection and in regard to its physical characteristics, elastic modulus, and tensile strength in-vitro. Methods: Acrylic bone cement, based on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was mixed with the powder form of three antibiotics, i.e., gentamicin, tobramycin, and...
